Family photos on the wall. A small folded U.S. flag on the shelf catching warm lamplight. Iced tea sweating onto a coaster. The room plain and lived-in and quiet with its own dignity. In the background maybe Rachel would be at the stove stirring something, or Nathan’s younger cousin would be dropping off groceries because people in towns like ours still bring casseroles when language fails them. That image stays with me because it tells the whole story better than the sabotage ever could.

My mother believed she could reduce my life to an empty lot.

Uncle Tom answered with an arm to hold while I walked forward.
