Russia unleashed a barrage of fire upon key Ukrainian cities, marking one of the deadliest waves of attacks in months.
Air raid sirens wailing in the dead of night across numerous Ukrainian cities quickly gave way to violent explosions as Russia launched one of its largest missile and drone attacks since the beginning of 2026. The capital, Kyiv—along with key cities such as Dnipro, Kharkiv, and many other regions—became the targets of a massive wave of airstrikes, leaving dozens dead and over a hundred injured.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russian forces launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in an operation described as being of exceptionally high intensity. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that a total of 656 drones and 73 missiles were fired overnight, making this one of the largest attacks since the conflict erupted in 2022.
In Kyiv, massive plumes of black smoke billowed from various parts of the city following a series of consecutive explosions. High-rise residential buildings sustained severe damage, windows were blown out, and numerous vehicles were left charred and burnt out on the streets. Power systems in several districts were disrupted, plunging hundreds of thousands of residents into darkness as rescue teams raced against time to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

Many residents of the capital were forced to evacuate to subway stations to take shelter. Thousands of people spread out mattresses, blankets, and personal belongings underground, transforming the stations into makeshift shelters. For many Kyivans, these scenes have become all too familiar after more than four years of war; yet, the sheer scale of this latest attack still left them in shock.
One Kyiv resident described the scene on the night of the attack as “apocalyptic.” According to this individual, loud explosions rang out in rapid succession, and smoke and dust engulfed numerous neighborhoods, while fire and rescue crews worked continuously to bring the blazes under control and evacuate residents from the struck buildings.
The city of Dnipro in southeastern Ukraine was among the areas hardest hit. A residential building was partially destroyed after being struck by a missile, killing many people, including children. Rescue workers spent hours sifting through the rubble of collapsed concrete in the hope of finding survivors. Images from the scene showed numerous apartments leveled, vehicles crushed, and a children’s playground severely damaged.
The initial death toll was recorded at at least 18 people, while more than 100 others were injured. However, Ukrainian officials warned that this figure could rise as search-and-rescue operations continue at multiple sites that came under attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the airstrikes and called upon Western allies to bolster their support for air defense systems. He emphasized that Ukraine requires additional modern interceptor systems—particularly the Patriot system—to counter the ballistic and hypersonic missiles that Russia is increasingly employing in its large-scale offensive operations.
According to Ukrainian military officials, although air defense forces successfully intercepted the majority of incoming aerial targets, a significant number of missiles and drones still penetrated their defenses, inflicting severe damage on civilian infrastructure. Reports indicate that dozens of targets across the country were struck.
Russia stated that the attacks were aimed at Ukrainian military and defense industry targets. The Kremlin asserted that this operation was a response to recent Ukrainian offensive activities directed at Russian territory. However, the Ukrainian side asserts that the majority of the damage occurred in residential areas and civilian infrastructure, while accusing Moscow of continuing to employ tactics aimed at pressuring civilians in order to undermine the Ukrainian people’s spirit of resistance.
The attack has also sparked alarm across the region. Neighboring NATO nations have stepped up air surveillance after numerous missiles and drones were detected operating in close proximity to the alliance’s borders. Several countries have deployed fighter jets to monitor the situation and bolster regional security.
Analysts suggest that this latest wave of airstrikes indicates the Russia-Ukraine war is entering a new phase of escalation, despite diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution. The use of a massive volume of missiles and drones in a single night underscores Russia’s capacity to sustain large-scale offensive operations, while simultaneously posing an escalating challenge to Ukraine’s air defense systems.
As dawn broke over Kyiv, plumes of smoke continued to rise from several areas that had come under attack. Rescue teams pressed on with their work amidst the rubble, while residents strove to salvage what remained following a night of terror. For millions of Ukrainians, the war—now dragging on for over four years—shows no signs of abating; Russia’s latest assault serves as yet another stark reminder to the world of the brutal toll this conflict is exacting upon civilians.
