In what was expected to be a showcase for Indiana Fever’s rising stars, it was veteran guard/forward Sophie Cunningham who absolutely stole the show, delivering a fiery and fearless performance that lifted the Fever to a 94–89 overtime victory against the Washington Mystics in their preseason showdown.

From hustle plays to clutch scoring, Cunningham gave fans a reminder that she’s not just a role player — she’s a game-changer.

Cunningham’s Commanding Performance
Cunningham finished the game with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and a presence that couldn’t be ignored. She played with intensity, physicality, and swagger — attacking the rim, hitting big-time shots, and keeping her foot on the gas all night long.
Whether it was a transition bucket, a contested three-pointer, or diving for loose balls, Cunningham showed off her full arsenal and her willingness to do whatever it took to win.
“I play with passion. I play to win. And I’m proud of how we fought tonight,” Cunningham said in a postgame interview.
Momentum Shifter
The Fever were trailing for much of the game, down by 10 in the third quarter. But Cunningham’s hustle and energy shifted the momentum:
She hit a tough three-pointer while being fouled to cut the lead in the third.
In the fourth, she grabbed a key offensive rebound and turned it into a put-back.
Her leadership on the floor — barking out switches and firing up teammates — helped rally the team into overtime.
Once in OT, the Fever outscored the Mystics 13–8, with Cunningham contributing on both ends of the floor.
Stepping Up Without Caitlin Clark
With rookie star Caitlin Clark sitting out for rest, the spotlight turned to Indiana’s veterans — and Cunningham embraced it. Her leadership was obvious, both in the huddle and during clutch possessions, proving that she’s not just a spark — she’s a stabilizer.

She worked seamlessly with NaLyssa Smith (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Aliyah Boston, anchoring a Fever squad that looks deeper and tougher than in years past.
Mystics Push Back, But Can’t Close
Washington had strong showings from Ariel Atkins and Shakira Austin, who kept them in control early. But foul trouble, late turnovers, and Cunningham’s relentless energy proved too much down the stretch. By the final buzzer, Indiana had taken over and never looked back.

“That’s what vets are supposed to do,” said Fever coach Christie Sides. “Sophie brought fire, composure, and attitude — everything we needed.”
Final Score: Fever 94, Mystics 89 (OT)
This win may not count toward the regular-season standings, but it matters in all the other ways: confidence, chemistry, and momentum. And most importantly, it proved that Sophie Cunningham isn’t just part of the team — she’s at the heart of it.
