The dream became reality on a historic night for women’s basketball as Paige Bueckers — the electrifying guard from the University of Connecticut — was selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings in the 2025 WNBA Draft. And while fans across the country celebrated, no one was more emotional, humbled, and ready than Paige herself.
“I’ve waited my whole life for this moment.”
As her name echoed through the draft venue in Brooklyn, Bueckers stood up with tears in her eyes, hugged her family and coaches, then made her way to the stage. With a bright smile and calm confidence, she proudly put on the blue and green Dallas Wings cap — a symbol of years of hard work, sacrifice, and resilience.
“This is everything I dreamed of as a little girl shooting hoops in my driveway,” Bueckers said in her post-draft interview.
“To be the No. 1 pick… it’s surreal. I’m just incredibly thankful.”
A Journey of Talent, Grit, and Comebacks
Bueckers’ rise to the top has been far from smooth. After taking the high school basketball world by storm and becoming the 2020 Gatorade National Player of the Year, she lived up to the hype — and then some — at UConn. Her freshman season was historic, earning National Player of the Year honors as she averaged 20 points, 6 assists, and nearly 5 rebounds per game.
But in 2022, adversity struck when she suffered a torn ACL that sidelined her for the entire season. Many wondered how — or if — she would return the same.
She didn’t just return. She dominated.
In her final college season, Bueckers led UConn to the Final Four, averaged over 21 points per game, and was once again a force on both ends of the court. Her comeback became one of the most inspiring stories in college basketball.
“That injury taught me patience, perspective, and passion,” she said.
“I came back with more love for the game than ever before.”
Why Dallas? Why Now?
The Dallas Wings are a team brimming with young talent, and now, they’ve added a true floor general and franchise cornerstone. Paige Bueckers brings elite playmaking, high basketball IQ, and leadership that can’t be taught. With stars like Arike Ogunbowale and Satou Sabally already on the roster, the Wings are building something special — and Bueckers is ready to be at the heart of it.
“Dallas believed in me. That means everything,” Bueckers said.
“I want to bring energy, winning, and a championship mindset to this team and this city.”
A New Face of the WNBA
Off the court, Bueckers is already a superstar. With over a million followers across platforms, endorsement deals with Nike and Gatorade, and a strong voice for social justice and gender equity, she’s positioned to be one of the defining figures of the league’s next era.
The WNBA isn’t just getting a star player — it’s getting a brand, a movement, and a leader.
What’s Next?
With the draft behind her and summer training camp on the horizon, Paige Bueckers is already shifting focus to what she does best: winning. Her WNBA journey is just beginning, but the expectations are sky-high.
“I know nothing is given in this league — everything is earned,” she said.
“I’m ready to go earn it. Let’s get to work, Dallas.”
