Referee Tyler Ricks accused her of being “disrespectful to the game of basketball,” a claim that Clark found perplexing. Despite the unusual interaction, Clark responded by leading her team to a 92-75 victory, finishing with 23 points and surpassing a WNBA rookie record for assists .​The incident sparked outrage among fans and analysts, with many arguing that the officiating was inconsistent and unfair.

Critics highlighted several missed foul calls against Clark, including an eye poke by DiJonai Carrington during a previous game against the Chicago Sky. Some speculated that Clark was being unfairly targeted, with one fan writing, “It can’t be accidental at this point.
