In response to the backlash, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert dismissed the notion that Clark was being specifically targeted by other players or referees. She attributed the perception to the heightened media spotlight on Clark, stating, “What people don’t realize is in college, there’s over 200 NCAA Division I women’s college programs. There’s 12 WNBA teams; so you take the talent, and it’s centralized with the best, the biggest, most physical, and, really, the best players in the world” .

However, the controversy has raised broader concerns about the treatment of players in the league. WNBA players, particularly Black athletes, have reported facing disproportionate criticism and scrutiny compared to their white counterparts. As the season progresses, the WNBA faces mounting pressure to address these issues and ensure fair treatment for all players. The league’s response to the Clark controversy will likely set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
