As training camp enters its second week, all eyes are starting to notice a new name standing out on the court: Makayla Timpson. On Day 12 of camp, the energy was high — and Timpson’s presence was impossible to ignore. From grabbing rebounds to battling in the paint, the rookie forward is showing that she belongs.

But what’s making headlines isn’t just her physical play — it’s her mindset, and how she’s soaking in every opportunity to learn from the veterans around her.

Making Her Mark
Throughout drills and scrimmages, Timpson’s effort was undeniable. She sprinted every possession, fought for every loose ball, and even drew applause from coaches after a hard-nosed offensive rebound that led to a second-chance bucket.
“Makayla is bringing a spark,” said Assistant Coach Lauren Jackson. “She’s coachable, physical, and plays with a chip on her shoulder. That’s what you want in a young player.”
Her defensive instincts, in particular, are standing out — with quick switches, smart help coverage, and the ability to protect the rim without fouling.

Learning From the Best
One of the most impressive things about Timpson’s development so far is how she leans into the experience around her. She’s often seen asking questions between drills, staying after practice to review film, and shadowing veteran bigs on footwork and spacing.

“I’m just trying to be a sponge,” Timpson said. “We’ve got vets who’ve been doing this at a high level for years. Every tip they give me — I take it seriously.”
Her connection with veteran forward Queen Egbo has grown quickly. The two have been spotted working on positioning, communication on switches, and timing on pick-and-roll coverage. Egbo had high praise:
“Makayla listens, and that’s rare. She wants to improve — and it shows.”

A Role Player… For Now
While a starting spot may not be in her immediate future, coaches are eyeing Timpson for a crucial rotational role — especially when the team needs energy, defense, and toughness off the bench. Her ability to adapt and play within the system is making her a reliable option in multiple lineups.
“She may not fill the stat sheet every night, but she does the little things that win games,” said Head Coach Christie Sides.
More Than Just a Rookie
Day 12 proved what many around the Fever are starting to realize: Makayla Timpson isn’t just another rookie fighting for a spot — she’s a competitor, a learner, and potentially a future cornerstone.
As camp continues, don’t be surprised if her name keeps popping up — because players who work like Makayla don’t stay under the radar for long.
