After a brief absence from Indiana Fever’s lineup, superstar rookie Caitlin Clark is back — and she’s speaking candidly about the challenge of making up for lost time and preparing, both mentally and physically, to face one of the WNBA’s top teams: the New York Liberty.
In her most recent media session, Clark opened up about the recovery process, the weight of expectations, and the emotional pressure of missing games while trying to lead a franchise in the middle of a rebuild.
“You feel like you’re letting people down — even when it’s the smart thing to sit.”
Clark addressed the tough decision to rest during Indiana’s previous matchup, saying it wasn’t taken lightly.
“It’s hard, honestly,” she said. “You want to be out there every game, especially when you know how much the fans care and how much attention the team is getting. But at some point, you have to listen to your body.”
After playing relentless minutes since her NCAA season at Iowa, then jumping straight into training camp and the WNBA grind, Clark admitted the transition has been intense — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Mental Reset and Recalibration
Clark emphasized that preparing for the Liberty — one of the most dominant and cohesive squads in the league — required not just getting back into game shape, but also taking time to mentally reset.
“This league is fast. It’s physical. And when you’re the player everyone’s watching, there’s almost no room to breathe,” she said. “But sometimes stepping back gives you clarity. You come back hungrier, sharper.”
She credited the Fever coaching staff for giving her space to recover, and her teammates for rallying while she stepped away.
Target Locked: New York Liberty
With stars like Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones, the Liberty are a full-force title contender. But Clark made it clear she’s not backing down.
“They’re elite, no doubt. But that’s what you want — to compete against the best. I’ve been watching film, working on my reads, and focusing on controlling what I can control.”
Her goal? To bring leadership, energy, and smart decision-making back to a Fever team that’s still fighting to find identity and rhythm.
Making Up for Lost Time — With Purpose
Clark’s return isn’t just about stats or wins — it’s about responding. Proving she belongs. And reminding everyone that one missed game doesn’t slow down a player with her fire.
“I don’t look at it like I lost time,” she said with a slight smile. “I look at it like I gained perspective — and now I’m ready to go.”
