Tesla’s India Investment Stalls as Elon Musk Ceases Contact
India’s hopes of securing a Tesla investment have dimmed as the electric vehicle (EV) giant has halted further communication with Indian officials, according to sources familiar with the situation. This development follows Elon Musk’s abrupt decision to postpone his visit to India in late April.
Tesla’s Silence Postpones Investment Plans
Sources indicate that Tesla executives have not pursued additional discussions with authorities in New Delhi since Musk canceled his scheduled trip. The Indian government now believes that Tesla is grappling with capital constraints and does not intend to commit fresh investments into the country in the near future.
This setback coincides with Tesla’s recent struggles, including a second consecutive drop in global quarterly deliveries and intensifying competition in China. The company is also undergoing significant staff reductions, while the rollout of its highly anticipated Cybertruck has been slower than expected. Additionally, Tesla’s planned factory construction in Mexico has faced delays.
Government and Industry Response
Representatives from India’s Ministry of Heavy Industries—responsible for overseeing the automobile sector—along with the ministries of finance, commerce, and industry, have not issued comments on the matter. Likewise, Tesla has remained silent in response to queries regarding its stalled India plans.
Musk initially announced his visit to India shortly after the government revised its EV import tax policies. The new regulations significantly lower import duties for foreign automakers that commit at least 41.5 billion rupees (approximately $497 million) in investments and pledge to establish local EV production within three years. His last-minute withdrawal from the trip, citing urgent Tesla-related issues, has cast doubt on the company’s immediate intentions for the Indian market.
India’s Alternative Strategy
With Tesla appearing to back away, India is now turning its focus to domestic manufacturers such as Tata Motors Ltd. and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. to drive the country’s EV expansion. Government officials assert that Tesla would still be welcome to take advantage of the revised import tax policy if it chooses to re-engage in discussions.
Despite India’s ambitions for a robust EV sector, the market remains in its early stages. Battery-powered vehicles accounted for only 1.3% of total car sales in 2023, according to BloombergNEF. The high initial cost of EVs and inadequate charging infrastructure continue to be major barriers to widespread adoption.
For now, Tesla’s investment in India remains uncertain, with no clear indication of when or if Musk will rekindle discussions with Indian authorities.
