Mike Pence Hails January 6 as a “Triumph of Freedom” While Accepting JFK Profile in Courage Award

In a powerful and emotional moment at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, former Vice President Mike Pence accepted the prestigious Profile in Courage Award and delivered a striking reflection on the events of January 6, 2021. Facing memories of the Capitol attack, Pence declared, “January 6 was a tragic day, but it became a triumph of freedom because Congress returned to fulfill its constitutional duty.”

“Our Institutions Held Firm”

Pence, who risked his career and personal safety by refusing then-President Donald Trump’s pressure to overturn the 2020 election results, was honored for his courage. “Our institutions held that day, not because of any one person, but because leaders in both political parties—Republicans and Democrats—did their duty,” he emphasized to the audience.

He also delivered a message of unity during a time of deep national division: “I know in my heart that we will find our way forward as one nation.”

Standing Up to Trump, Upholding Principles

Despite relentless pressure from Trump, Pence stood firm. He presided over the certification of Joe Biden’s victory as Congress counted the Electoral College votes, even as the Capitol was stormed by rioters. While police battled to regain control, Pence, along with his wife and daughter, remained inside the Capitol. Once order was restored, he continued overseeing the certification process.

“An Act of Courage That Saved Our Government”

During the ceremony, Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President Kennedy, remarked that at the time, she thought Pence was simply doing his job. “Only later did I realize that his act of courage saved our government and warned us about what could happen—and is happening right now,” she said.

Jack Schlossberg, Kennedy’s grandson, added that Pence put the nation’s interests above his own and “saved America that day.”

Reflecting on Values and Differences

Pence also addressed his differences with both parties, reaffirming his conservative values while acknowledging disagreements on issues such as tariffs, government spending, and foreign policy. “I believe America is the leader of the free world and must continue to stand with Ukraine until the Russian invasion is repelled and a just and lasting peace is secured,” he said.

He described himself as “profoundly unworthy” of the award, and credited his aides, as well as his wife and daughter, for standing by him during the crisis. He also praised the Capitol Police, stating, “When I think of that fateful day four years ago, the only heroes I saw were wearing uniforms.”

Inspired by Kennedy

Pence shared that President Kennedy was his childhood hero and inspiration for a life of public service. “To be here tonight, bearing witness to a journey that President Kennedy helped inspire in my small life, is more meaningful than I can possibly express,” he reflected.

In closing, Pence expressed hope and faith in the resilience of American democracy, reminding the nation that even in its darkest hours, courage and duty can prevail.
