In a dramatic roster shake-up, the Indiana Fever announced that both Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham have been cleared to return just in time for their rematch against the New York Liberty — but the news comes alongside a surprise move: guard Aari McDonald has been waived.
Clark, the Fever’s highly publicized rookie, missed the previous game due to rest and recovery, sparking concern and conversation across the WNBA fanbase. Sophie Cunningham, sidelined earlier with a minor injury, is also expected to be back in the rotation. With both players now cleared, Indiana is looking to bring full force into one of their most challenging matchups of the season.
“We’re excited to have Caitlin and Sophie back,” said head coach Christie Sides. “Their energy, scoring, and toughness give us the boost we need heading into a tough game like this.”
However, the announcement was bittersweet, as it also included news that Aari McDonald had been waived. The former top-3 draft pick joined Indiana in the offseason and showed flashes of potential off the bench, but with Cunningham’s return and the need to balance the roster, the team made a tough decision.
“This was not an easy move,” said General Manager Lin Dunn. “Aari is a competitor and a great teammate. But roster flexibility is a part of this league, and we made a decision based on our current needs.”
McDonald’s release opens the door for potential reinforcements or future signings as the Fever navigate a challenging stretch of their season.
As Indiana prepares to face the powerhouse Liberty squad once again, all eyes will be on how Clark’s return impacts the team’s momentum — and how they respond to the shake-up in the locker room.
