There’s no doubt that the UFC’s rise to prominence is largely due to its passionate fans. Whenever their favorite fighters step into the arena, they show up in huge numbers, supporting them regardless of a win or loss. Terence Crawford recently shared his thoughts on this, pointing out that boxing fans could learn from UFC fans. He believes boxing culture is too focused on staying undefeated, while MMA fans continue backing their fighters even after setbacks.

Crawford pointed out a big difference between MMA and boxing fans. He noted that in the UFC, fighters can lose and still have strong support from fans. However, in boxing, Floyd Mayweather’s undefeated legacy created a culture where a single loss can ruin a fighter’s reputation. Many fans quickly dismiss boxers as “bums” after a defeat, even if they lost to a top opponent. Crawford believes this mindset is unfair and harms the sport’s fighters.

In his words, “One thing I love about UFC, a guy can lose and still be supported. In boxing, Floyd made it to where, you lose, they kick you to the curb and say “you a bum” it’s like man, dude lost to a good fighter!.”

A clear example of this difference is Deontay Wilder. After his first loss, many fans claimed he was finished. This isn’t uncommon in boxing, where a single defeat can damage a fighter’s reputation. In contrast, UFC fighters like Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor, and Tony Ferguson continue to have strong fan support despite multiple losses. The MMA community values exciting fighters and their overall journey, while boxing often places too much emphasis on an undefeated record.

Crawford’s coach, Brian MacIntyre, believes a fight against Canelo Alvarez could be the perfect way for Crawford to end his career. At 38 years old, Crawford has already cemented his legacy as one of boxing’s greats, and a showdown with Canelo would be a massive event. MacIntyre suggested that if the fight happens, it wouldn’t be surprising if Crawford decides to retire afterward.

With nothing left to prove, he could walk away from the sport later this year. It’s not just Crawford—boxing could be entering a new era with new fighters. Gervonta Davis has also hinted that he may be nearing his final fight. As some of the biggest names in the sport consider stepping away, it opens the door for the next generation of boxers to take over.
