In a powerful announcement that has reignited debate over billionaire responsibility, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has pledged to donate 99% of his personal fortune—currently valued at over $113 billion—by the year 2045. In doing so, Gates also criticized fellow billionaire Elon Musk, accusing him of contributing to what he described as “deadly cuts” in global aid.

 A Lifelong Mission Nears Its Final Chapter

Speaking at a press conference hosted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates reiterated his long-standing belief that extreme wealth should be used to benefit society at large. “I’ve always said that I would give nearly all of my fortune away,” Gates stated. “Now, I’m formalizing that pledge.”

Gates revealed that the Foundation, one of the largest philanthropic entities in the world, will wind down its operations by 2045, ensuring that his wealth is strategically distributed over the next two decades. The funds will focus on combating malaria, tuberculosis, hunger, climate change, and educational inequality, especially in low-income nations.

 Blaming Musk and Others for “Catastrophic Consequences”

While outlining his donation timeline, Gates also took aim at Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who has in recent years influenced U.S. foreign aid policies through his political lobbying and public criticism of government spending abroad.

“There is no excuse for cutting life-saving aid,” Gates said. “When billionaires with massive platforms lobby against foreign aid, the results are not just political—they are lethal. Millions of lives are at stake.”

He pointed to recent USAID budget reductions, which slashed global health funding by over $4 billion, citing a “reckless trend” where philanthropy is treated as a “branding tool” rather than a life-saving necessity.

 The Cost of Inaction

Global health experts have echoed Gates’ concerns. According to the World Health Organization, recent reductions in vaccine distribution and food assistance programs have already resulted in increased child mortality rates in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.

Dr. Angela Morris, a public health analyst, noted:

“We’ve seen a 20% drop in measles vaccinations and malaria net distribution since 2023. These are not abstract numbers—they represent real children, real families.”

What Comes Next?

Despite his pointed remarks, Gates emphasized that his focus remains on solutions, not rivalry. He extended an invitation to Musk and other ultra-wealthy figures to “join forces” in tackling the planet’s most urgent challenges.
