Following a historic UFC 316 event that sent shockwaves through the heavyweight division, interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has finally broken his silence. In a recent interview, Aspinall shared his thoughts on the main card, the state of the heavyweight division, and most intriguingly—his openness to fighting the knockout monster Francis Ngannou.
Aspinall Reacts to UFC 316: “A Changing of the Guard”
Aspinall didn’t hold back in his reaction to UFC 316, praising the card for its intensity and hinting at a shift in the UFC’s heavyweight hierarchy.
“It was one of those nights where you could feel things changing. We’re entering a new era—more athleticism, more speed, and guys that are evolving technically. I’m proud to be part of that wave.”
While the main spotlight was on Merab Dvalishvili’s destruction of Sean O’Malley, Aspinall made it clear: the heavyweight division is wide open and heating up.
On Fighting Francis Ngannou: “Let’s Make It Happen”
In one of the most headline-worthy moments of the interview, Aspinall addressed the elephant in the room: a potential fight with former UFC champion and current PFL star Francis Ngannou.
“If the UFC can get Francis back in, I’ll be the first to sign that contract,” Aspinall said. “No disrespect to anyone else, but that’s the fight. That’s legacy. That’s real heavyweight violence.”
With UFC president Dana White recently hinting at being open to working with Ngannou again, fans have been buzzing about the possibility of a UFC-PFL crossover bout. Aspinall vs. Ngannou could very well be the blockbuster heavyweight clash the sport needs.
Aspinall’s Confidence: “I’m in My Prime”
Riding high off his dominant TKO victory over Sergei Pavlovich and holding the interim title, Aspinall believes now is the perfect time for the biggest fights of his career.
“I’m faster than ever, sharper than ever. I respect Francis, but I’m not afraid of him. I think I’m the most well-rounded heavyweight in the world right now.”
He emphasized that while Jon Jones remains the official champ, it’s Aspinall who’s keeping the division alive with activity and hunger.
What’s Next? Jones, Ngannou, or Ciryl Gane
With Jon Jones still recovering from injury and no clear date for a return, Aspinall is stuck in limbo. But he made it clear: he won’t wait forever.
“I want to fight the best. If it’s not Jon, let’s do Francis. If not Francis, give me Ciryl Gane. I just want to stay active and prove I’m the top heavyweight on the planet.”
Conclusion: A New Era for the Heavyweights
Tom Aspinall has emerged as not just a dangerous fighter but also a vocal leader for a new breed of heavyweights—athletic, intelligent, and ambitious. Whether it’s Jon Jones, Francis Ngannou, or another top contender, one thing is clear: Aspinall is ready for anyone, anytime.
“This is the heavyweight division. It only takes one shot—but if you come at me, you better be perfect. Because I’m not giving you a second chance.”
