The MMA world is buzzing again — and this time, it’s centered around a potential dream fight that’s already causing fireworks before it even gets booked.
Ilia Topuria, the undefeated featherweight champion and rising star from Spain and Georgia, recently called out lightweight king Islam Makhachev, expressing interest in a champ-vs-champ showdown. But what shocked fans was the radio silence — and then subtle rejection — from Makhachev’s camp.
Even more surprising? Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev’s mentor and former lightweight GOAT, reportedly advised against taking the fight.
Now, UFC legend and former double champ Daniel Cormier has chimed in — and he’s not holding back.
“I Understand Why They Said No”
In a recent segment on DC & RC, Cormier was asked about Topuria’s callout and the rumors that both Islam and Khabib weren’t interested in entertaining it. Cormier gave a classic, balanced response — but made it clear that there’s more to this than just ducking.
“Listen, I love Topuria — that kid’s a beast. But Islam has nothing to gain right now from fighting him,” DC said.
“He’s trying to build a legacy at 155, and Topuria hasn’t even defended his belt yet. It’s not the time.”
Cormier also pointed out that Khabib and Islam are playing the long game, focusing on defending the lightweight belt against top contenders rather than chasing superfights.
“If Ilia beats a few guys at featherweight, defends that belt a couple times, then it becomes a real conversation.”
Khabib’s Influence: Strategic or Safe?
Reports claim that Khabib personally advised Makhachev to avoid the Topuria fight — at least for now. While some fans saw this as a smart move, others cried “duck!”, especially given Topuria’s fast rise and brutal KO of Volkanovski.
Cormier, who’s long been close with Khabib, defended the call:
“Khabib is one of the smartest minds in the sport. He’s not scared of anyone — but he knows how to manage careers. It’s chess, not checkers.”
Topuria Fires Back
Unsurprisingly, Ilia Topuria hasn’t stayed quiet.
In an interview with Spanish media, he fired shots at Islam and Khabib:
“If they don’t want the smoke, just say it. I’m ready to fight anyone, anytime. I’m not here to wait — I’m here to take over.”
Fans quickly took sides online, with some praising Topuria’s fearlessness, and others saying he should “clean out featherweight first” before chasing superfights.
What’s Next for Islam & Ilia?
Daniel Cormier wrapped up his thoughts by saying the fight could happen — just not yet.
“It’s not off the table forever. If Ilia keeps winning, and Islam clears out his division? That could be one of the biggest fights in UFC history. Just not in 2024.”
In the meantime, Islam is rumored to defend his belt against contenders like Arman Tsarukyan or a possible rematch with Charles Oliveira. Topuria, on the other hand, may be facing Max Holloway, fresh off his BMF title win at UFC 300.
Final Thoughts
The idea of Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria is pure fire — two dominant champs, both elite grapplers with knockout power. But for now, Daniel Cormier says patience is key.
“Let the story build. Then give the fans what they want — when it really matters.”
