United pilot makes difficult decision to cancel flight on runway after passenger’s outrageous bathroom behavior

A United pilot made the difficult decision to cancel a flight while it was on the runway after a passenger smoked marijuana in the bathroom of the plane.

United flight UA1679 from San Francisco to Mexico had originally been delayed due to technical issues, according to a Reddit thread regarding the incident.

Yet the original delay prompted one passenger to grow restless.

The passenger was then found to have smoked marijuana in the bathroom of the aircraft during the delay.

The smoker was taken off the plane, but the flight crew then deliberated over what they should do for the next 40 minutes.

In the end, the pilot decided to cancel the flight after the flight crew became concerned they may have inhaled the drug through second smoke.

‘I have 30 years left of my career at United, I’m not willing to risk getting drug tested when I get to Houston,’ the pilot announced to the aircraft.

While unlikely, there would be no way for the pilot to know if they would be drug tested as they landed at their final destination, nor if the secondhand smoke would show up on the test.

Passengers on the aircraft were deplaned and offered a $15 meal voucher, as well as snack cart that came to the gate.

The flight then awaited another replacement crew.

Frustrated passengers who encountered a similar experience commented on the thread sharing outrage over the passengers ‘selfish’ act.

‘I was on flight out of Miami once where we first delayed for a mechanical issue and as we were getting ready to go [and someone] decides to vape in the bathroom and set off the smoke alarm,’ one user wrote.

‘The pilot comes back to investigate and then gets exposed to the smoke. Since they don’t know what it was, the pilot had to leave the aircraft. The smoker is throwing a fit and has to have security remove her from the plane. After two hours, no pilot. Flight cancelled. I’m stuck in Miami two extra days.’

Another user replied: ‘I love how one selfish person ruins it for everyone.’

‘As the captain should have!! I’m not losing my job over y’all stupidity!! So yes your flight will be delayed. Due to your fellow passengers,’ one wrote.
