Shocking moment police shoot shovel-wielding maniac outside California elementary school

Shocking body camera footage caught the moment California police fatally shot a shovel-wielding man outside an elementary school.

Anaheim police have said they received a call about a suspicious man who appeared to be homeless and under the influence of drugs standing outside of a home and holding a brick at around 12:10pm on September 15.

An officer arrived at the scene about half an hour later.

But around the same time, dispatch received a second call from an employee at the nearby John Marshall Elementary School reporting that a man matching the description of the previous caller was now near the campus.

The school employee said he was ‘just pacing around’ with a broken shovel and had been loitering in the area for about an hour.

He had first been in the parking lot of the school, and was later pacing along Falmouth Street, she explained.

Just minutes later, an unidentified police officer saw the suspect – identified as Rudy Anthony Martinez II, 36 – using a crosswalk with the shovel slung over his shoulder.

‘Oh s***,’ the cop could be heard saying in the newly-released dashcam video as he approached the suspect.

As soon as Martinez noticed the officer, he could be seen running toward the patrol car with a shovel raised over his head.

Martinez then proceeded to strike the car several times, prompting the officer to get out.

‘Sit down,’ he said as Martinez once again struck the vehicle. ‘Sit… you’re gonna get shot.’

At that point, body camera footage shows Martinez charged directly at the officer with his shovel raised – prompting the officer to fire at least four shots, striking the suspect, who fell to the ground on his back.

The police officer then reports that there was an officer-involved shooting, and first responders arrived on the scene to administer first aid.

They then brought Martinez to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about half an hour later.

Police noted that the officer was not injured in the incident, and a shovel with a broken handle was recovered from the scene.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is now investigating the shooting.

The barrage of gunfire prompted John Marshall Elementary School to temporarily lockdown, ABC 7 reports.

Police said class was in session during the incident, but none of the students were exposed to the shooting.

In a statement, the Anaheim Elementary School District said the school ‘immediately initiated a lockdown… ‘out of an abundance of caution.’

‘At no point was there a direct threat to our students or staff,’ it said, adding: ‘We are in constant communication with the Anaheim Police Department and are following all established safety procedures to ensure the wellbeing of our school community.’
