Man plows into security gate outside White House causing lockdown

An area surrounding the White House was put under lockdown on Tuesday night after a driver plowed into a security gate.

The unidentified driver rammed the barricades at the intersection of 17th and E Street NW at around 10.30pm before he was immediately arrested by officers from the Secret Service’s uniformed division.

Investigators searched his car and deemed it to be safe, Secret Service officials said in a statement.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the crash.

Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or any motivation for the crash as the investigation continues.

In the meantime, the road leading to the gate will remain closed until police tow the dark sedan away, but the White House itself is not on lockdown.
