Man opens fire in NYC killing 4 people in gruesome attack before turning gun on himself
The police have released more details regarding the shooting that took place on Monday when a man began shooting at people inside a building in New York City.
On Monday (July 28), a Las Vegas man walked into a building at 345 Park Ave in New York City and began firing a gun.
The shooter killed four people and left one person critically injured. Authorities have confirmed that one of the deceased was an off-duty police officer.
N.Y.C. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch confirmed that surveillance footage showed the shooter exiting a double-parked black BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets, carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand.
Tisch said: “We believe this to be a lone shooter and there is no active threat to the public.”
During a press conference at Weill Cornell Medical Center the New York Police Department identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas.
The NYPD also said that he had a ‘documented mental history’.
Scenes after the shooting
The building security camera footage caught aspects of the shooting.
It showed Tamura enter the lobby and turn right, and immediately open fire on an NYPD officer.
He then shot a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeded through the lobby, while spraying with gunfire.
He then went to the elevator bank and shot at a security guard who was taking cover.
The shooter entered the elevator which opened in the lobby, a woman exited, and he allowed her to walk past him unharmed.
Tamura got the elevator the 33rd floor, which houses Rudin Management, and began to walk the floor, firing the gun as he did.
One person was struck and killed on that floor.
The shooter proceeded to walk down the hallway and shoot himself in the chest. Another person was shot in the lobby, according to his comments he made when he was taken to hospital.
It is not clear if the shooter had any ties to any of the companies within the building and any motive in the attack remains unknown.
The New York City Mayor Eric Adams identified the deceased off-duty police officer as Didarul Islam.

He also made a comment about the overall shooting, saying: “Our hearts are heavy. Five innocent people were shot tonight,” Adams said. “We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam.”
Speaking off the police officer, he continued: “He protected New Yorkers. He’s an immigrant from Bangladesh. And he loved this city. And everyone we spoke with stated, he was in person of faith, and a person that believed in God and believed and living out the life of a godly person. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker.”
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do,” Commissioner Tisch said of Islam. “He died a hero.”
