Horrific tragedy after two women left SIX young children alone in swimming pool while they went to bar

A four year old girl died after being left unattended inside the swimming pool of a private health club while her mom ate and drank inside the club bar, police said.

The unidentified girl died after being pulled from the water by her own sister inside Deer Lake Athletic Club in Independence Township, Michigan, on Friday night.

Police said two women had brought six kids to the pool, aged 12, 10, 8, 6, and 4 and left them all unattended in the water.

The women, who have yet to be identified, left the children with floatation devices and went to the club’s bar area where they ordered food and drinks.

According to the preliminary investigation by Oakland County Sheriff’s Office the two women remained there for 35 minutes while the children were alone.

The toddler was removed from the pool by her own sister while the two women remained at the bar before being located.

Deputies responded to find the child sprawled out on the pool deck and being given CPR by two adult males and a female.

Paramedics then arrived on the scene shortly after and rushed the girl to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the two women brought five of their children to the pool on Friday evening and made for the club's bar and restaurant after leaving them

Sheriff Michael Bouchard commented: ‘This is a horrific and tragic death that easily could have been avoided.

‘We always encourage that not only is there an adult present for any children swimming activity, but one adult is specifically tasked with watching and not just in the area.

‘We have seen cases where children have drowned in a pool surrounded by adults.’

According to police the pool depth caried from three to five feet, with investigators finding pool toys and noodles in the area but no life vests after arriving on the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing, with a report to be submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for further consideration.

In a statement, the club said: ‘It is with profound sadness that we share the news of a tragic incident involving a child that occurred at our facility on January 30, 2026.

‘Our hearts are broken for the child and their family. While we don’t know the outcome of the event at this time, we extend our most sincere prayers for everyone involved.

‘No words can adequately express the sorrow felt by our entire club community. Emergency services were contacted immediately, and staff members responded in accordance with established safety and emergency protocols.

‘We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they conduct their review of the incident.’
