Part 1: The Last Photograph

On my mantelpiece sits a photograph taken in September 1987: twenty small, beaming faces and me—a hopeful 25-year-old teacher—standing in the middle. It’s the last picture ever taken of my first kindergarten class at Northwood Elementary, in north Philadelphia.

For a while, I believed it too—until I found an old box of mementos. Inside was a drawing by Jamal, my quietest, brightest student. He’d drawn our classroom, with two adults: one, labeled “MRH,” was a monster under the desk (the janitor); the other, “Dr. Cole,” stood beside me, smiling.

Dr. Edward Cole—the school psychologist, always praised as a “savior of underprivileged children.” He had his own key to my classroom and ran “special observation sessions” after hours—sessions I never knew about.

Part 4: The Hidden Monster

I began to investigate Dr. Cole. Parents remembered him selecting “special children for observation groups.” I found a 2014 conference where he spoke passionately about “feral states in socially isolated children.”

His words were clinical, cold. But I realized: he wasn’t talking about theory—he was talking about his own experiment.

Digging deeper, I found an anonymous 1989 academic paper describing a “study of 20 urban children placed in a subterranean, soundproofed room.” The acknowledgments credited the Finch Cole Institute—founded and funded by Dr. Cole.

I kept searching for physical proof. In the city archives, I finally found it: a work order, dated the week I’d left, authorizing “construction of a subterranean psychological observation room,” signed by Dr. Edward Cole.

Part 5: Confronting Evil

I called the police. On my way home, I saw a luxury car parked outside. Dr. Cole stepped out, calm and collected.

Inside my living room, he didn’t deny anything. Instead, he tried to justify his actions: “Those children were a unique opportunity—a perfect control group. I was on the verge of a breakthrough.”

“You murdered them,” I whispered.

He waved a hand dismissively. “An unfortunate variable. The ventilation failed. Their deaths were a tragic loss—for science.”

Suddenly, Detective Rossi and two officers burst in. Dr. Cole was arrested, his mask of composure finally breaking. He was no longer a brilliant academic—just a small, pathetic man, exposed at last.

The system saw them as statistics, “at-risk youth from unstable communities.” That perception made them invisible, the perfect victims for a monster hiding behind a mask of benevolence.

But I—who remembered—told their names to the world. That was my final duty as their teacher.
