At 80, Gladys Kпight FINALLY Coпfirms The Rumors | HO
Knight has revealed that she didn’t want to sign with the Soul Label at Motown Records. The Pips, her brother Bubba, and cousins outnumbered her, voting to sign with Motown in 1966. Gladys and The Pips hoped to rise to fame at Motown, but they soon encountered difficulties. Diana Ross, the lead singer of The Supremes, was also at Motown, and there were rumors that Motown’s founder, Barry Gordy, favored her.
Gladys Knight, known globally as the “Empress of Soul,” has finally opened up about her life’s triumphs, tragedies, and long-standing rumors, offering fans a revealing glimpse into her private world. Born on May 28, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, Knight’s journey to stardom was paved with immense talent, resilience, and personal struggles.
From a tender age, music shaped Knight’s life profoundly. At just four years old, she performed at Mount Mariah Baptist Church, immediately showcasing her remarkable talent. Her family environment nurtured this passion—her parents, Merald Woodlow Knight and Sarah Elizabeth, were active choir members, providing a musical backdrop that fueled her artistic dreams.
Knight’s formal introduction to fame began in her childhood home during her brother Bubba’s birthday party when an impromptu family performance laid the foundation for the group known famously as Gladys Knight & the Pips. This ensemble, comprising her siblings and cousins, captured audiences quickly with their soulful melodies, eventually selling millions of records.
However, their journey to success was far from smooth. Signing with Motown Records in 1966 brought fame but also friction, particularly due to tensions with the label’s superstar, Diana Ross. Knight recently spoke candidly about feeling overshadowed at Motown, revealing incidents where founder Berry Gordy allegedly favored Ross significantly. She described an incident where Gordy dismissed them from a tour because Ross felt threatened by their performances.
The group’s departure from Motown to Buddha Records in 1973 marked a significant turning point, allowing them creative freedom and resulting in massive hits like “Midnight Train to Georgia,” which soared to the top of both pop and R&B charts. Their career flourished further internationally, particularly in the United Kingdom, where several singles achieved remarkable success.
Despite their musical triumphs, internal strife eventually led to the group’s dissolution in 1988, largely due to disagreements over business interests. Knight believed her brother Bubba was exploiting their success for personal gain, causing irreparable rifts within the family-led group.
Knight’s personal life has been equally dramatic. At 16, she experienced her first marriage to James Newman, marked by early motherhood and heartbreak when her husband struggled with substance abuse, ultimately abandoning the family. Knight bravely paused her burgeoning career to focus on her children, demonstrating unwavering maternal dedication. After enduring a separation, their marriage formally ended in 1973, with Newman passing away shortly thereafter.
Knight remarried music producer Barry Hankerson in 1974, with whom she had her son Shanga Ali. Their relationship, however, deteriorated quickly, leading to a bitter custody battle that profoundly impacted Shanga emotionally and psychologically. Her subsequent marriage to motivational speaker Les Brown also ended amid intense personal differences, though Brown notably encouraged Knight’s successful autobiography.
A severe gambling addiction also marked a significant struggle in Knight’s life. Initially drawn to casinos by the allure of excitement and escapism, her gambling habit quickly spiraled out of control, impacting both her finances and family life. Knight bravely sought help through Gamblers Anonymous, eventually reclaiming her life and refocusing on her family and music.
Family drama reemerged prominently when her son Shanga faced legal troubles, convicted for tax evasion involving his restaurant chain “Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles.” This scandal led to a painful estrangement between mother and son, highlighting the complex challenges Knight endured away from the stage.
Throughout her life, Knight has faced controversy with strength and grace. In 2019, her decision to perform at the Super Bowl amid racial tensions surrounding NFL protests drew criticism. However, Knight stood firm, emphasizing her intentions to foster unity and honor through her performance.
Despite personal trials, Knight found lasting happiness with her current husband, William McDowell, whom she married in 2001. McDowell, significantly younger, manages her career and supports her creatively, proving to be her true partner. Knight lovingly credits him with revitalizing her life, emphasizing their profound connection and mutual respect.
Her enduring legacy extends beyond music into humanitarian efforts, actively participating in charity events and community service. Recognized for her lifelong contributions, Knight received prestigious honors, including the Kennedy Center Honors presented by President Joe Biden in 2022.
Knight’s resilience and ability to navigate life’s complexities underscore her remarkable journey. From profound family tragedies and career hurdles to personal redemption and continued artistic passion, Gladys Knight’s story remains inspiring. Today, at 80 years old, she continues captivating audiences worldwide, solidifying her status not just as a musical legend but as an enduring symbol of strength and authenticity.
