One of the most dynamic and multi-talented athletes in college basketball, Flau’jae Johnson, has finally spoken out about her highly anticipated WNBA Draft decision — and her reasons are as powerful as her presence on and off the court.
In a heartfelt interview, the LSU star opened up about what went into her choice, balancing her basketball future, personal growth, and her blossoming music career.
“This Was Bigger Than Just Basketball”
Flau’jae Johnson shocked many fans when she announced that she would not enter the 2025 WNBA Draft, despite being eligible and having a strong collegiate resume. While her game speaks for itself — elite defense, fearless scoring, and clutch mentality — Johnson said her decision came down to timing and purpose.
“I know I’m WNBA-ready, but I also know I’m building something bigger right now — for myself and for others who look up to me,” Johnson explained.
“This was about growth, alignment, and being 100% ready — mentally, physically, and spiritually.”
The Balance: Athlete and Artist
As the daughter of late rapper Camouflage and a rising star in her own right, Flau’jae has made waves in the music industry alongside her basketball career. She’s already appeared on America’s Got Talent, signed with Roc Nation, and built a loyal fanbase — all while being a key piece of LSU’s success on the court.
“Being an artist and an athlete is not easy — but it’s who I am,” she said.
“I want to enter the WNBA with no regrets. When I get there, I want to give it everything.”
By postponing the draft, Flau’jae is making room to elevate both sides of her identity without compromise.
Support from LSU and Coach Kim Mulkey
Flau’jae also made it clear she wasn’t making this decision alone. She credited her coaching staff, especially Kim Mulkey, for giving her space and support to think it through.
“Coach Mulkey’s been supportive the whole way. She told me, ‘Whatever you decide, just make sure it’s yours — and that you’re proud of it.’ That meant a lot to me.”
She also praised her LSU teammates, calling them “family” and expressing her excitement to run it back with a strong returning group for one more season.
Looking Ahead: “My Time Will Come”
Though she’s delaying her WNBA debut, Flau’jae Johnson made one thing crystal clear: she’s coming.
“When I step into the W, it’ll be because I know it’s time. No doubt, no distractions — just domination,” she said.
“I respect the league too much to show up halfway ready. I want to change the game when I get there.”
Final Thoughts: A Decision with Purpose
In an era when many athletes are chasing quick leaps to the next level, Flau’jae Johnson’s decision stands out — not because of what she walked away from, but because of what she’s building. Whether it’s one more season in college, another album, or both, Johnson is moving with purpose and patience.
And when she finally walks across that WNBA Draft stage — it won’t just be a basketball moment. It’ll be a cultural one.
