The Dinner Table
Every family has secrets.
Some hide them well, buried under smiles and polite conversations. Others pretend they don’t exist at all. In the Nguyen family, secrets lived quietly between the walls of their old house, waiting for the moment when silence would finally break

It was a rainy Sunday evening when everything began to fall apart.
The family sat around the dinner table as they did every week. The smell of fish sauce, steamed rice, and fried pork filled the air. Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows.
Minh, the eldest son, stared at his phone.
His younger sister, Lan, quietly picked at her food.
Their father, Mr. Nguyen, read the news on his tablet.
Their mother, Mrs. Nguyen, placed another dish in the center of the table.
Eat more,” she said softly.
No one responded.
This was normal.
Silence had become the language of their family.
Finally, Mr. Nguyen cleared his throat.
I have something to say.”
Minh didn’t look up.
Lan stopped eating.
Mrs. Nguyen slowly sat down.
I’m retiring next month,” Mr. Nguyen said.
Lan smiled politely.That’s good, Dad.”
Minh nodded without interest.
But Mr. Nguyen continued.
And I’ve decided to sell the house.”
The room froze.
Lan dropped her chopsticks.
“What?”
Minh finally looked up.
You can’t be serious.”
Mr. Nguyen remained calm.
I already spoke to a real estate agent.”
Mrs. Nguyen looked shocked.
You never told me.”
I’m telling you now.”
Minh’s voice rose.
“This house belonged to Grandpa!”
It belongs to me now,” his father replied coldly.
Lan looked between them nervously.
Where will we go?”
Mr. Nguyen leaned back in his chair.
I’ve already bought an apartment.”
Apartment?” Minh said angrily. “For who?”
For your mother and me.”
The meaning hit everyone at once.
Lan whispered,
You mean… we have to move out?”
Mr. Nguyen didn’t answer directly.
You’re both adults.”
The silence returned, but now it felt heavier.
Minh pushed his chair back.
This is unbelievable.”
He walked out of the dining room.
Lan looked like she might cry.
Mrs. Nguyen said quietly,
You should have talked to the children first.”
Mr. Nguyen stared at his plate.
I did what was necessary.”
But deep inside, he knew the storm had only just begun.
Old Wounds
Later that night, Minh stood on the balcony smoking a cigarette.
Lan stepped outside.
You shouldn’t smoke so much,” she said.
Minh exhaled slowly.
“You heard him.”
Lan leaned against the railing.
He’s always been like that.”
Minh laughed bitterly.
No. He’s worse now.”
Lan looked down at the street.
What are you going to do?”
I’m not leaving this house.”
You don’t have a choice.”
Minh turned toward her.
Maybe I do.”
Lan frowned.
What does that mean?”
Minh hesitated.
There are things you don’t know.”
Lan felt a strange chill.
“What things?”
Before Minh could answer, the balcony door opened.
Mrs. Nguyen stepped out.
Her eyes looked tired.
You two should sleep.”
Minh asked,
Mom, did you know about this?”
She shook her head slowly.
No.”
Lan asked softly,
Are we really losing the house?”
Mrs. Nguyen looked at the dark sky.
This house holds too many memories.”
Minh’s voice hardened.
“That’s exactly why we can’t lose it.”
His mother studied his face.
“You sound like your grandfather.”
Minh smiled faintly.
“He would never sell it.”
Mrs. Nguyen sighed.
“Your father has his reasons.”
Minh muttered,
“He always does.”
But no one asked the most important question:
What were those reasons?
The Hidden Debt
Two days later, Minh visited the family office.
His father had owned a small construction company for thirty years.
But something felt wrong.
The building was almost empty.
Several desks were gone.
The receptionist avoided his eyes.
“Is my father here?” Minh asked.
“No,” she said nervously.
“When will he return?”
“I’m not sure.”
Minh walked into his father’s office.
The drawers were open.
Files were missing.
On the desk was a single envelope.
His name was written on it.
Minh.
His heart beat faster.
He opened it.
Inside was a bank document.
Minh’s eyes widened.
Five million dollars.
Debt.
His father owed five million dollars.
Minh whispered,
“What the hell…”
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The house.
The sudden decision.
The apartment.
His father wasn’t selling the house for comfort.
He was selling it to survive.
Minh grabbed his phone and called Lan.
“You need to come here.”
“What happened?”
“Just come.”
The Truth
Lan arrived twenty minutes later.
Minh handed her the paper.
She read it.
Her face turned pale.
“This… this can’t be real.”
“It is.”
“How did this happen?”
Minh shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Lan whispered,
“Does Mom know?”
“I doubt it.”
They sat in silence.
Finally Lan said,
“So selling the house won’t even cover this.”
Minh nodded.
“Not even close.”
Lan looked terrified.
“Are we going bankrupt?”
Minh rubbed his forehead.
“I think we already are.”
At that moment, the office door opened.
Mr. Nguyen walked in.
He stopped when he saw them.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Minh held up the document.
“We know.”
His father’s face darkened.
“You had no right to read that.”
Lan shouted,
“No right? We’re your children!”
Mr. Nguyen remained calm.
“This is my problem.”
Minh slammed his hand on the desk.
“No. It’s OUR problem.”
His father finally looked tired.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
For a long moment, Mr. Nguyen said nothing.
Then he spoke quietly.
“Ten years ago… I made a mistake.”
Lan whispered,
“What kind of mistake?”
“A business deal.”
Minh asked,
“With who?”
Mr. Nguyen’s eyes hardened.
“A man named Tran.”
Lan froze.
“Tran… from Tran Group?”
Mr. Nguyen nodded.
One of the most powerful businessmen in the city.
Minh frowned.
“What does he want now?”
His father answered with a single sentence.
“Everything.”
A Family Divided
That night, the Nguyen family argued louder than ever before.
Mrs. Nguyen cried.
Lan paced the room.
Minh shouted at his father.
“You risked everything!”
Mr. Nguyen replied coldly,
“I was trying to build a future for this family.”
“By gambling our house?!”
Mrs. Nguyen whispered,
“You promised me there were no more debts.”
Mr. Nguyen looked away.
“I thought I could fix it.”
Lan asked quietly,
“What happens if we don’t pay?”
No one answered.
Minh finally said,
“Tran will take everything.”
Lan felt sick.
“But why now?”
Mr. Nguyen sighed.
“Because he can.”
Minh clenched his fists.
“I’ll talk to him.”
His father immediately said,
“No.”
“Why not?”
“You don’t know what kind of man he is.”
Minh smiled coldly.
“I think I’m about to find out.”
The Man Behind the Power
Two days later, Minh stood inside the luxurious headquarters of Tran Group.
Everything was marble, glass, and silence.
A secretary led him to the top floor.
“Mr. Tran will see you now.”
Minh stepped inside.
Behind a massive desk sat a man in his fifties.
Calm.
Sharp.
Dangerous.
“Minh Nguyen,” he said with a slight smile.
“I’ve heard about you.”
Minh didn’t sit.
“You’re destroying my family.”
Mr. Tran laughed softly.
“No.”
“I’m collecting a debt.”
Minh placed the document on the desk.
“You know my father can’t pay this.”
Mr. Tran leaned back.
“That’s not my concern.”
Minh asked,
“What do you really want?”
Mr. Tran studied him carefully.
Then he said something unexpected.
“I want you.”
Minh frowned.
“What?”
Mr. Tran smiled.
“Work for me.”
Minh stared in disbelief.
“And the debt?”
“It disappears.”
Minh’s voice turned cold.
“What’s the catch?”
Mr. Tran replied calmly.
“You never leave.”
The room fell silent.
Minh realized something terrifying.
This was never about money.
This was about control.
And now his family was trapped in the middle of it.
