The Indiana Fever have officially signed guard Aari McDonald to a hardship contract, the team announced Monday, as they look to reinforce their backcourt depth in the wake of multiple injuries affecting the roster.

McDonald, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft, brings three seasons of league experience and is best known for her high-intensity defense, explosive speed, and playmaking abilities. She most recently played with the Atlanta Dream, where she averaged 8.6 points, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game across three seasons.

The signing comes at a crucial moment for the Fever, who are currently dealing with a string of injuries — most notably to rookie star Caitlin Clark, who is listed as day-to-day with a mild ankle sprain. Veteran guard Erica Wheeler is also managing knee soreness, and forward Temi Fagbenle remains sidelined with a foot injury.

With roster spots limited and game schedules tight, the hardship contract provides temporary relief, allowing the Fever to add an extra player beyond the standard 12-player limit due to injury-related absences.

“We’re excited to bring Aari in,” said head coach Christie Sides. “She’s a proven competitor with playoff experience, and her energy and defensive presence will be a great addition while we navigate this stretch.”

McDonald participated in her first practice with the team earlier this week and is expected to be available for the Fever’s upcoming games. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity: “I’m ready to help wherever I’m needed. I’ve stayed ready, and I’m excited to contribute.”
The Indiana Fever are currently battling for a playoff spot and will rely on McDonald’s experience and versatility to maintain momentum while awaiting the return of key players.
