In one of the more unexpected twists of the 2025 WNBA season, Aari McDonald has gone from guarding Caitlin Clark to replacing her — at least temporarily.
The Indiana Fever announced today that they’ve signed McDonald to a hardship contract following a brief injury setback for Clark, who is nursing a mild ankle sprain and is expected to miss several games. With Indiana suddenly short-handed in the backcourt, the team acted quickly to add veteran depth and found a natural fit in McDonald — a former No. 3 overall pick known for her elite perimeter defense and high motor.
Just a week ago, McDonald was making headlines as the Atlanta Dream guard tasked with face-guarding Caitlin Clark in a heated matchup. Her relentless defense sparked intense debate online, with some praising her tenacity and others criticizing the physicality of her approach. Now, in a turn of events no one could have predicted, she’s wearing the same jersey as Clark — and possibly starting in her absence.
“Basketball is a small world,” McDonald said after her first Fever practice. “One minute you’re locking someone down, the next you’re stepping into their shoes. I’m just here to help the team however I can.”
McDonald brings WNBA experience, playoff toughness, and a chip on her shoulder after being waived earlier this season. The 5’6” guard spent her first three seasons with the Dream, where she built a reputation as one of the league’s best on-ball defenders.
For the Fever, this is a smart move: McDonald offers instant energy, veteran instincts, and most importantly, reliable ball-handling in Clark’s absence. The team is still in the hunt for a playoff spot, and every game counts.
Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark is expected to return within 7–10 days. Until then, all eyes will be on McDonald — a player who, in a matter of days, has gone from guarding a superstar to guarding her legacy.
