An Ohio mother is praising social media—and modern medicine—after what looked like a harmless mark on her fingernail turned out to be a rare and dangerous form of skin cancer.
In February 2025, Lauren Koltcz, a mom of two from North Royalton, Ohio, spotted a thin brown line on her left thumbnail. She didn’t think much of it at first, assuming it was the result of a vitamin deficiency. But when the discoloration began to darken and spread, she started asking questions.

After showing the mark to a nurse practitioner, she was told it might be a fungal infection. She tried the recommended medication, but it had no effect. The line continued growing across her nail and thickened, prompting her to take matters into her own hands.
Like many do in today’s digital age, Lauren turned to TikTok. What started as a casual search turned into a deep dive—one that led her to a video from a dermatologist warning about brown or black lines on fingernails. The doctor in the video urged viewers to seek immediate medical attention if they noticed similar symptoms.

Lauren took the advice seriously. She booked an appointment at the renowned Cleveland Clinic, where doctors performed a biopsy on the suspicious mark. Dr. Allison Vidimos, a specialist at the clinic, instantly recognized the concerning nature of the discoloration.
“The pigment was unusually dark, featured varying shades of brown, and was over three millimeters wide,” Dr. Vidimos explained.

The biopsy results were sobering: Lauren was diagnosed with subungual melanoma, a rare but aggressive form of skin cancer that develops beneath the nail. Known as acral lentiginous melanoma, it often appears as a vertical stripe and can spread quickly if not detected early.
Lauren was stunned. “You always hear stories about other people getting cancer,” she said. “Suddenly, I was one of them.”
Fortunately, her cancer was caught at what doctors call “stage zero,” meaning it hadn’t spread beyond the top layer of skin. Surgeons removed the cancerous tissue along with some surrounding skin. No chemotherapy or radiation was necessary, and as of now, she shows no signs of the disease returning.

She continues to receive routine follow-up care from her dermatologist.
Reflecting on her experience, Lauren said, “I know some people don’t trust TikTok, but that app gave me the push I needed to get checked. I just keep thinking, how lucky I was to catch it when I did—and to have such excellent doctors on my side.”
