Longview Schools superintendent arrested for obstructing sexual assault investigation
A scandal surrounding a sexual assault investigation at Mark Morris High School in Longview, Washington, is sending shockwaves through the American public after Karen Cloninger—Superintendent of Longview Public Schools—was arrested on charges of obstructing the authorities’ investigation. The incident has not only sparked a wave of outrage among parents but also raised critical questions regarding the accountability of education administrators in protecting students.
According to the Longview Police Department, Ms. Cloninger was arrested on May 21, 2026, facing charges that include witness tampering, failure to report a mandatory crime, and obstructing law enforcement. These are serious allegations directly linked to the sexual assault investigation taking place at Mark Morris High School.

The investigation began in early 2026, when several students came forward to report acts of violence and sexual abuse within the school’s basketball team. According to investigative records, at least four students on the junior varsity basketball team were coerced by older players, dragged into the locker room, and subjected to harassment or sexual assault. Some of these incidents were described as acts of “hazing”—rituals involving the bullying or humiliation of new members on a sports team—but they crossed the line and escalated into serious criminal offenses.
What has sparked public outrage is that, according to the police investigation, school district administrators were aware of the allegations as early as late January 2026 but failed to immediately notify law enforcement. Instead, the school reportedly attempted to handle the matter internally. Longview police stated that school staff members had expressed concerns regarding their mandatory reporting obligations concerning the abuse of minors; however, internal discussions ultimately concluded that notifying the police was not yet necessary.
According to investigative records, Karen Cloninger is alleged to have instructed staff members to “keep the matter quiet” and to limit discussions regarding the abuse allegations. Investigators also uncovered evidence indicating that numerous text messages related to the case had been deleted from her personal cell phone. A detective with the Longview Police Department opined that Cloninger likely used her personal device to conduct school district business and subsequently deleted data pertinent to the case.
Immediately following Cloninger’s arrest, the Longview School Board convened an emergency meeting and voted to place her on administrative leave. Interim Superintendent Patti Bowen issued a statement declaring that the district “places the utmost priority on student safety” and is committed to cooperating fully with the investigating authorities. In addition to Ms. Cloninger, Mr. Andrew Schoonover—the school district’s Director of Student Services—also faces charges related to failing to report the incident and providing false information to authorities. Police stated that additional individuals may be investigated or arrested in the near future.
Meanwhile, the community of parents and students in Longview has expressed intense outrage. Many parents allege that the school district deliberately covered up the incident in an effort to protect the reputation of both the school and its athletic programs. Earlier, in February, dozens of students staged protests and walked out of classes to object to the school’s handling of the matter, following the circulation of details regarding the assault on social media.
The two students accused of directly carrying out the assault were arrested in February 2026. They face a litany of charges, including second-degree rape, unlawful imprisonment with sexual motivation, indecent liberties, and public indecency. Their trial is scheduled to take place this summer.
The incident in Longview has now become a heated topic across American social media platforms. Many observers view this as a textbook example of schools prioritizing their public image or athletic achievements over the safety and well-being of their students. On Reddit, numerous comments have harshly criticized the school district’s leadership for allegedly “sweeping the incident under the rug.” Some local residents have also indicated that the Longview community largely supports Ms. Cloninger’s arrest as a necessary step toward establishing legal accountability.
Education experts suggest that this scandal could trigger significant changes to regulations regarding student supervision and mandatory reporting obligations within schools throughout Washington state. U.S. law explicitly mandates that teachers, school staff, and educational administrators have a responsibility to immediately report to authorities if they detect any signs of child abuse. Intentionally delaying or concealing such information can result in serious criminal liability.
Beyond damaging the reputation of Longview Public Schools, this incident has deeply eroded parental trust in the local education system. Many families have expressed feeling betrayed, as those entrusted with protecting students are now accused of prioritizing the preservation of the school’s public image over ensuring the safety of minors.
The investigation is currently ongoing and continues to expand in scope. Longview police have stated that they are reviewing additional electronic evidence, internal records, and statements from school staff to determine whether any other individuals were involved in concealing information or obstructing the investigation.
This case serves as a stern warning to educational institutions regarding the legal and ethical repercussions of failing to transparently address allegations of sexual abuse within schools. Amidst growing public demand in the U.S. for greater accountability from educational administrators, the outcome of the Longview investigation could have far-reaching implications for school safety policies nationwide.
