Kansas City Chiefs sign new quarterback after Patrick Mahomes struggles in Super Bowl loss | HO

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed quarterback Chris Oladokun on a Reserves/Futures contract – following on from Patrick Mahomes’ struggles at Super Bowl LIX.

Andy Reid’s team fell to a wounding 40-22 loss in the showpiece against the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9 as they fell short of completing the first “three-peat” in NFL history. Having won the previous two editions of the Big Game, the Chiefs failed to live up to expectations in this year’s spectacle – as the Eagles avenged their 2023 loss.

Talismanic quarterback Mahomes was among those earmarked by observers as having underperformed in the clash at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome. The three-time Super Bowl MVP completed 21 of 32 passes for 257 yards, while tallying up three touchdowns and two interceptions against Philadelphia.

His showing in the first half of the encounter proved to be one of the most subdued of his career- as he completed 6 of 14 for 33 passing yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. As the Chiefs look to put this defeat behind them, it has been announced that they are already making preparations for the 2025 campaign.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Oladokun has extended his stay in Missouri, as he now looks to gain an active roster spot. The one-time seventh round draft pick has played just one game for KC before today, with that appearance coming at the backend of the 2024 regular season against the Denver Broncos.

The 27-year-old ended proceedings that day having tallied up five offensive snaps, including one rush for five yards. Speaking last year, Oladokun vowed to compete with his colleagues as he sent out a firm message to his teammates, saying: “I’m always going to come out here and compete.

“No matter who’s in the room. Every day, I’m trying to beat Pat (Patrick Mahomes), Carson (Wentz), and Ian (Book); that’s my job,” he continued, as he issued a signal of intent. “There’s a lot of intensity in terms of my work, how I go about things, and making sure I put my best foot forward.”

He also spoke about the work he had undertaken alongside superstar Mahomes, saying: “I went in this off-season and worked with Pat (Patrick Mahomes) and Jeff Christensen a lot; I did a lot just from mechanically with my feet, even the way I was gripping the ball; they made a lot of changes that way. So I feel a lot more comfortable.”

As for Mahomes, he has made no secret of his anguish after Super Bowl LIX, as he admitted that the loss was as painful to experiences as his previous defeat in the Big Game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He confessed: “They both sucked. These will be the two losses that motivate me the rest of my career.”

“Anytime you lose a Super Bowl, it’s the worst feeling in the world. It will stick with you the rest of your career. Those have been two losses that will motivate me to be even better for the rest of my career because you only get a few of these and you have to capitalize on them.
